Missiles hit oil tankers: three attacks in Strait of Hormuz, Saudi vessel intercepted
On September 1, local time, multiple oil tanker-related maritime safety incidents occurred in the Strait of Hormuz and the Indian Ocean, the global energy transportation artery. UKMTO reported that there were no reports of casualties or environmental impacts and that relevant authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. UKMTO advises ships to sail with caution and report any suspicious activity.
On the same day, UKMTO issued Safety Notice No. 123, stating that it had received reports of an incident involving an oil tanker and armed forces in the Indian Ocean. The UKMTO did not provide further details, other than to advise ships to consider the latest maritime safety information and maintain awareness of the changing operating environment.
In the early morning of September 1, local time, the Saudi oil tanker "Sidar" was intercepted while passing through the southern channel of the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi officials have yet to respond.
The day before (August 31), Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated that a very large oil tanker (VLCC) trying to "illegally pass" through the southern Strait of Hormuz caught fire after hitting a mine and stopped sailing, stressing that ships must abide by their regulations for passing through the Strait of Hormuz. However, the U.S. Central Command immediately issued a statement saying that the above statement of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards was "untrue" and emphasized that "no ship hit a mine in the Strait of Hormuz."
