US Slaps Tariffs up to 159.04% on Chinese Goods in Shock Move
Recently, the U.S. Department of Commerce issued an announcement to make a positive final anti-dumping ruling on diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) imported from China, ruling that the anti-dumping tax rate for Chinese manufacturers and exporters is 85.11%-159.04%.
This case mainly involves products under the US coordinated tariff numbers 2929.10.8010 and 3909.31.0000.
The final ruling determines the dumping margin as follows:
Diphenylmethane diisocyanate is a key raw material for manufacturing polyurethane and is widely used.
The primary product of this product is widely used in polyurethane coatings. In addition, it is also used in waterproofing materials, sealing materials, ceramic materials, etc. Polyurethane foam made from this product can be used as parts for thermal insulation (cold), building materials, vehicles, and ships; refined products can be made into car bumpers, buffers, synthetic leather, non-plastic polyurethane, polyurethane elastic fibers, non-plastic elastic fibers, films, adhesives, etc.
According to U.S. statistics, the total amount of diphenylmethane diisocyanate imported by the United States from China in 2024 will be US0 million (approximately RMB 1.64 billion), and the import volume in 2023 will be US0 million (approximately RMB 1.57 billion).
Tariffs faced by China's MDI exports to the United States:
During President Trump’s first term in the United States, MDI was already subject to the original Section 301 China tariffs (25%). In 2025, President Trump imposed so-called "reciprocal tariffs" on all Chinese imported products. Although the current trade agreement between China and the United States has decided to continue suspending the 24% tariff until November 10, 2026, it still retains an additional 10% tariff on all imported products from China.
This means that including the basic basic tariff of 6.5%, China's MDI exports to the United States are already facing a tariff of 41.5%.
Recently, U.S. President Trump warned that if China provides military assistance to Iran during the Middle East war, the United States will impose retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on Chinese goods exported to the United States.
Agence France-Presse reported that Trump said in an interview with Fox News on Sunday (April 12): "If we find that they do this, they will face a 50% tariff, which is a staggering number - a very staggering number."
It is reported that some media previously released smoke bombs, saying that US intelligence showed that China was preparing to provide air defense systems to Iran within a few weeks.
A spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in the United States refuted the claim, telling CNN: "China has never provided weapons to any party in the conflict; the relevant information is untrue."
Previously, on April 8, local time, U.S. President Trump also posted on his social media platform "Real Social" that any country that provides military weapons to Iran will be "immediately levied with a 50% tariff" on "any and all goods" sold to the United States. He also said that the measure "takes immediate effect" and "does not include any exclusions or exemptions."
