Recently, due to the attack on the container ship MSC United VIII, the situation in the Red Sea, which has just seen hope of resuming sailing, is once again full of uncertainty.

On December 26, Mediterranean Shipping Company issued a supplementary statement stating that MSC’s top priority “remains to protect the lives and safety of our seafarers, and MSC will continue to divert ships until their safety is ensured.”

On December 27, Maersk said it would arrange for dozens of container ships to pass through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea in the next few weeks. But most of its ships still choose to go around the Cape of Good Hope. Maersk also emphasized that the current overall risk in the Red Sea has not been eliminated, and it will reassess if the security situation changes.

Hapag-Lloyd, which originally announced an attempt to resume traffic through the Suez Canal, issued the latest announcement on December 27 that it believed that the Red Sea situation was still too dangerous to cross the Suez Canal, so it would maintain the diversion at the Cape of Good Hope.

It is worth noting that after France made it clear that it would “prioritize its own shipping interests,” the French navy has begun escorting its merchant ships through the Red Sea.

The ships involved include CMA CGM’s container ships “CMA CGM Pegasus”, “CMA CGM George Washington” and “APL Salalah”.

Although we have already seen two container ships from CMA CGM passing through the Bab el Mandeb Strait.

However, on December 26, CMA CGM stated that it is currently formulating plans to gradually increase the number of ships passing through the Suez Canal. At the same time, it is constantly monitoring the situation and is ready to quickly reevaluate and adjust the plan as necessary.

Currently, mainstream shipping companies have announced a suspension of sailings in the Red Sea for a week. Faced with the turbulent situation in the Red Sea, container ships of various shipping companies mainly detour around the Cape of Good Hope.
