$166 billion! U.S. Customs will launch the largest tax refund in history
On March 6, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officially submitted documents to the International Trade Court, confirming the recently high-profile tariff refund plan. According to data disclosed by the court, this tax refund amounted to US6 billion and will benefit approximately 330,000 traders who have exported goods to the United States.
This follows a final ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court. The court found that the global tariffs imposed by the government under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act were illegal and ultra vires. This means that every penny of tariffs that U.S. importers have paid over the past few years must now be refunded.
The tax refund work is expected to be officially launched in late April 2026. The refund will not only include the principal of US6 billion, but the United States will also need to pay corresponding interest calculated from the date the tariffs arrive.
At the operational level, relevant companies only need to submit an electronic summary statement in the system after the ACE automation system function of the US Customs is updated.
Foreign traders and freight forwarders should pay close attention to the dynamics of the official U.S. Customs system (ACE) and check their own or customers’ account settings as soon as possible. The U.S. Customs requires that all tax refunds must be paid electronically (Electronic Refunds).
