DDP vs FOB vs DDU Shipping to Philippines | Which Terms Win
- Place of Origin | China
- Departure Country/Region | CHINA (Guangzhou / Shenzhen / Shanghai)
- Destination Country/Region | PH (Philippines - Manila, Cebu, Davao)
- Transit Time (Days) | Sea: 15 Days (Manila) / 25 Days (Cebu & Davao); Air: 3-5 Days
- Shipping Method | DDP Door to Door (Sea FCL & LCL, Air Freight)
- Cargo Type | General cargo - furniture, appliances, building materials, machinery, e-commerce stock
Two quotations for the same container can differ by a third and both be honest. The gap is usually not freight. It is the incoterm, and what each term leaves for the importer to pay after the vessel berths.
Sunny Worldwide Logistics has moved cargo on the China–Philippines lane for more than 20 years. We quote DDP, and we would rather explain what that removes from your side of the ledger than let a low number do the talking.
Why the Incoterm Decides Your Final Cost
Freight is the visible part of a quotation. The part that decides your landed cost sits on the other side of the water: terminal handling, brokerage, duties, VAT, and the delivery leg to your address. A rate that stops at the port is not a cheaper rate. It is an incomplete one, and the remainder arrives later as somebody else's invoice.
The three terms below move the same cargo. What changes is where the responsibility changes hands — and who is holding the risk when a container is held for valuation, or a delivery truck cannot get through your gate.

What Each Term Actually Buys You
DDP — Delivered Duty Paid
We carry the whole chain: collection at your supplier, export declaration, ocean or air freight, Philippine import clearance, the assessed duties and taxes, and delivery to your warehouse. One price, one accountable party. If the shipment is held, the conversation is ours, not yours.
FOB — Free On Board
Your supplier's responsibility ends when the cargo is on board at the Chinese port. The freight, the clearance and every peso collected at destination become yours. On paper FOB shows the smallest number, and that is exactly why it wins comparisons it should not win.
DDU — Delivered Duty Unpaid
We deliver, but duties and taxes remain yours. It looks like a middle path and often behaves like a trap: the delivery arrives, then a tax bill follows it. Buyers who have been surprised once tend to move to DDP and stay there.
Where the Risk Actually Sits in Each Term
- DDP: you sign one figure and you pay one figure. Damage, delay and customs arguments sit with the forwarder.
- FOB: cheapest line on the quotation, largest exposure at the destination port, and no single party accountable for the last leg.
- DDU: delivery covered, fiscal liability not — the one cost most likely to arrive after your budget was approved.
There is a second layer. A DDP invoice is only meaningful if the declaration behind it is accurate. Declaring a lower value to shrink the duty line creates a liability that follows the shipment, not the forwarder. We do not offer that, and we will say so at quotation stage rather than at the port.
What Moves Best Under DDP, and the Documents You Still Produce
Cargo that suits this lane
Furniture and fittings, home appliances, building materials, machinery and spare parts, e-commerce stock and mixed supplier orders. FCL suits a full factory load; LCL suits the shipment that is not yet a container, and we will tell you which side of that line yours falls on.
Documents you still have to produce
No forwarder can invent your paperwork. You provide the commercial invoice with an accurate description and value, the packing list with carton counts, dimensions and gross weights, an HS code where you have one, and the certification your product requires if it is regulated.
Small consignments get a lighter path. Under Section 423 of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act, goods with an FOB or FCA value of PHP 10,000 or below are not subject to duties and taxes at all, and commercial goods below PHP 50,000 are processed as informal entry. Our guide to the Philippines BOC de minimis rules sets out how that works.

How a DDP Shipment Moves
Collection and consolidation
We collect from your suppliers with our own trucking fleet at the Shenzhen and Guangzhou ports, then consolidate at our warehouse against your packing list. The sequence is on our service flow page.
Export and the ocean or air leg
Export declaration is filed against the invoice and packing list, and the consignment joins the booked sailing or the next air uplift. Sea freight runs about 15 days door to door to Manila and about 25 days to Cebu or Davao. Air freight runs 3 to 5 working days.
Clearance and payment of duties
On arrival we clear the shipment and pay the assessed duties and taxes, with clearance typically running 1 to 2 days ahead of the industry average. This is the step FOB hands back to you, and the step that decides whether a low quotation was ever a low cost.
Delivery
We deliver to your warehouse, free within 30km of the Metro or downtown area. Tell us at quotation stage whether the site has a loading dock — a redelivery is a cost nobody budgets for.
Why Shippers Choose Sunny Worldwide Logistics
We own the first mile. Our own trucking fleet operates at the Shenzhen and Guangzhou ports, so the leg where cargo is most often damaged or delayed stays with us rather than being handed to a subcontractor.
We have run this lane for more than 20 years, through every change in Philippine import rules. NVOCC and FMC registered, and members of the Worldwide Cargo Alliance, CIFA, JCTRANS, WIFFA, FUDA, SZSSA and OLO.
Every inquiry gets at least three routing or consolidation options, designed to save clients at least 5% against their current arrangement — including telling you when a term other than DDP genuinely suits your situation better. Optional cargo insurance is available.
Our Manila DDP shipping service is quoted this way, and your stock and shipment records are visible in our dedicated warehouse system as they move.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is DDP always more expensive than FOB?
On the quotation, yes, because it includes duties, taxes and delivery. On landed cost the comparison only holds once you add your own destination charges, brokerage and inland trucking to the FOB figure. Most importers find the difference is smaller than the risk they were carrying.
Who is the importer of record under DDP?
It depends on how the arrangement is documented, and it should be settled before the first booking rather than at the port. Confirm the structure with your customs broker; we will tell you what the paperwork has to say.
Can I switch terms after the booking is confirmed?
Rarely cleanly. The term is fixed in the commercial invoice and the booking, and changing it later re-prices the shipment and can complicate the import declaration.
Send us the product, the volume and the delivery address, and you will get a DDP figure alongside the FOB alternative, so the comparison is made on the same cargo. Contact Sunny Worldwide Logistics — or start from our air freight China to Philippines lane if the shipment is urgent.
