On the afternoon of March 16, local time in Turkey, a large container ship named "YM Witness" with a capacity of 14,000TEU chartered by Yang Ming Shipping suddenly broke down while berthing at Evyap Port in Izmit, Turkey. Accident.

The ship collided with the quay crane at the terminal, causing at least three container quay bridges at the terminal to collapse and be damaged, causing multiple containers on the ship to fall into the water.

Footage from the scene shows when the accident occurred. The YM Witness was unable to control its speed in time, causing it to crash into the quay crane at the pier. One crane collapsed first, and then the crane next to it also collapsed. A total of three large quay quay cranes were hit and collapsed.

According to Turkish media reports, there was a pilot on board the ship at the time of the incident, but for unknown reasons, the ship failed to control its speed and hit the dock at a large angle.

The port authority also reported that the incident also caused several containers on the ship to fall into the sea. Authorities are still investigating the accident.

It is reported that the three cranes that fell have been completely scrapped, and another one has been affected. Each crane cost about 12 million US dollars, and the estimated loss is at least 50 million US dollars.

Initial reports stated that workers and crane operators were not present at the time of the accident and that no one was injured in the serious incident, averting a major disaster. But Turkish media later reported that the operator of one of the cranes was seriously injured in the incident.

It is understood that the YM Witness is a 368-meter-long container ship flying the Hong Kong flag. The ship was built in 2015, with a deadweight of 145,000 tons and a transport capacity of 14,000TEU.

The MD3 route (Far East to Mediterranean Service) serving THE Alliance's Far East to Europe was on voyage 039W/039E when the incident occurred, involving shared cabin shipping companies: HAPAG-LLOYD, HMM, ONE, and YANG MING.

Before the incident, the YM Witness had called at Ningbo Beilun on January 24, Shanghai Yangshan Port on January 26, and Shenzhen Shekou Port on January 30. When the accident occurred, there was still a large amount of Chinese export cargo on the ship that had not been unloaded.

"YM Witness" is a ship leased by Yang Ming Shipping. Its actual owner and manager is Seaspan, the world's leading independent container ship owner.

Since the shipowner is responsible for the operation of the chartered ship and the investigation of maritime accidents, when an accident occurs while "YM Witness" is berthing, Sespan will actively communicate and coordinate with the competent authorities of the berthing port to clarify the responsibility for the accident. .

It is worth mentioning that recently, an 8,500TEU large container ship owned by Evergreen Marine Corp., which is also in Taiwan, had an unexpected accident in the waters near Qingdao and collided with a small bulk carrier.

The two accidents occurred one after another, once again reminding cargo owners and freight forwarding companies to strengthen the control of cargo risks and purchase freight insurance in a timely manner to compensate for cargo losses when accidents occur.

Since a large amount of the cargo carried on the ship comes from Chinese ports, cargo owners and forwarders who have recently stowed the ship through ONE, Hapag-Lloyd, Yang Ming Shipping and HMM need to pay special attention and contact the stowage shipping company in a timely manner to learn about the collision. In the terminal accident, whether your cargo was damaged, and the impact of the accident on subsequent shipping delays.
