After 28 days, CMA CGM has once again announced the resumption of flights on the Red Sea!

Just 28 days after the Feb. 2 announcement of a total Red Sea shutdown, the France's CMA CGM, the world's third-largest container liner, took the lead in announcing the resumption of Red Sea sailings!

Recently, CMA CGM, the world's third largest shipping company, issued an updated announcement on its Red Sea operations, announcing that it has reassessed the situation in the southern part of the Red Sea, and that the evolving situation has enabled CMA CGM to resume Red Sea voyages on a case-by-case basis.

CMA CGM stated that each vessel is carefully assessed prior to each transit and therefore it is not possible to predict or communicate the vessel's choice of route.

Other than that, all other vessels will be rerouted through the Cape of Good Hope.

It is understood that due to the ongoing attacks by Yemen's Houthi forces on merchant vessels sailing in the Red Sea, France's CMA CGM announced on February 2 that all its vessels were suspending all transits in and out of the Bab-el-Mandeb strait in the Red Sea, and that all vessels were being rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope in Africa until further notice.

CMA CGM 's decision to suspend shipping was made after its large container ship "KOI" was attacked by Yemeni Houthi militants.

It is worth noting that, although CMA CGM in early February again stopped sailing in the Red Sea, but "dare to take risks" shipping company CMA CGM has not given up trying to cross the Red Sea!

Around February 20, CMA CGM once again tried to transit the Red Sea, and its container ship "CMA CGM Jules Verne" successfully transited the Red Sea under the escort of the French Navy.

In a statement, CMA CGM said, "With the assistance of the French Navy, the CMA CGM Jules Verne successfully passed through the Red Sea escorted by a frigate."

The success of the CMA CGM Jules Verne has certainly provided confidence for CMA CGM to resume its voyage!

Some analysts say that transiting through the Cape of Good Hope instead of the Red Sea and Suez Canal between Asia-Europe/Mediterranean adds about 10-14 days to the voyage in each direction.

Analysts estimate that about 80% of container ships have already shifted to transit around the Cape of Good Hope.

In addition, analysts say customers want their cargoes to arrive quickly, and CMA CGM 's resumption of Red Sea sailings may allow it to offer cheaper rates than its competitors.
