Two major ports in the West and the United States release data for August



The two major ports in the Western United States, the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach, recently released data for August this year.


The Port of Los Angeles' container throughput increased year-on-year for the first time in 13 months in August. In August this year, the container throughput of the Port of Los Angeles was 828,000 TEU, a year-on-year increase of 2.8%.


This is the first time in 13 months that the port has recorded year-on-month growth. Among them, import heavy containers increased by 7.3% to 433,200 TEU, and export heavy containers increased by 22.2% to 125,000 TEU. In addition, the number of empty containers passing through the Port of Los Angeles fell by 9.9% to 269,800 TEU.


In the first eight months of 2023, the container throughput of the Port of Los Angeles was 5.6497 million TEU, a year-on-year decrease of 21.0%. LB’s freight volume this year is basically the same as before the epidemic.




U.S. container imports will exceed 2 million TEUs in September



Imports at major U.S. container ports are likely to exceed 2 million TEU for the second consecutive month in September, according to the latest Global Port Tracker research report released by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates. It remained at this level in October.


U.S. ports covered by the Global Port Tracking System handled 1.91 million TEUs in July, an increase of 4.4% from June but a decrease of 12.4% year-on-year. It is expected to reach 2 million TEU in September and October, possibly for three consecutive months.


These figures will bring the 2023 TEU volume to 22.3 million TEU, a 12.5% ​​decrease from last year, while January 2024 is expected to reach 1.91 million TEU, a 5.4% increase from last year.

The container ship ELBSUN, built in 2012, has a carrying capacity of 877 TEU and a load capacity of 12,283 tons. It flies the Portuguese flag and is managed by USC BARNKRUG GMBH & CO KG. The insurance company is Steamship Mutual Underwriting Association (Bermuda).


Data from major shipping schedules show that the ELBSUN is a regional feeder ship operating in the Mediterranean. Shipping companies that may share cabins on the ship include CMA CGM and ANL.
